According to Globo.com, Memphis Depay has been reported to the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva for using a mobile phone on the bench during Corinthians' 1-1 draw with Flamengo at Neo Química Arena on Sunday, in the eighth round of the Campeonato Brasileiro.

He may be charged under article 258 of the CBJD, which covers conduct contrary to discipline or sporting ethics not otherwise specified. Any sanction ranges from one to six matches plus a proportionate fine.

The complaint cites the need for exemplary conduct by high-profile athletes, warning that phone use on the bench could weaken disciplinary control, enable improper communications and complicate enforcement for referees and organisers.

The Dutch forward was taken off after 22 minutes of the first half with pain in his right thigh. He later returned pitchside for the second half after showering and was seen using the device. The coaching staff reprimanded him immediately.

Depay wears the No 10 for Corinthians.
