The Messi family said in a statement on Thursday that Jorge Messi is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing well, while expressing discomfort at recent rumours. They urged responsibility, prudence and humanity.

The update followed scenes of an emotional Lionel Messi wiping away tears after scoring his first goal against Algeria in Argentina’s 2026 World Cup opener. That strike set up a standout display rounded off by a hat-trick, which made him the leading goalscorer in World Cup history.

After the game it emerged the tears could be linked to a health issue affecting his father, a matter the family stressed is strictly private.

The statement did not disclose the diagnosis and criticised rumours and speculation in recent hours.

The family condemned what they view as a lack of sensitivity and respect, adding that only the closest relatives have accurate information on Jorge Messi’s condition.

They asked that no credibility be given to claims from non-official channels and thanked those who have sent messages of support.
