Bayern Munich fought back from a half-time deficit to demolish RB Leipzig 5-1 in Saturday’s standout Bundesliga fixture at the Red Bull Arena.

Leipzig got the new calendar year off to a perfect start, beating fellow European hopefuls Freiburg 2-0 at home on Wednesday, courtesy of two unanswered second-half goals.

Bayern also enjoyed a winning start to 2026, though they had to come back from a goal down to overcome bottom-half FC Cologne on the road, extending their winning league streak to three games.

More importantly, Vincent Kompany’s side protected their near-flawless Bundesliga record this season, ensuring they entered the weekend as the only side yet to lose a single game (W16, D2).

However, the Bavarians suffered from Kompany’s decision to bench Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich in the early stages of the game, as Leipzig dominated proceedings in the opening ten minutes.

Christoph Baumgartner and Antonio Nusa wasted two huge chances to put the home side in front only seven minutes into the game, but Ole Werner’s team had their more esteemed visitors on the ropes.

Bayern had it coming, and the Red Bull outfit took a well-deserved lead midway through the first half when David Raum picked out Romulo Cardoso inside the box with a defence-splitting pass.

The Brazilian forward was relentless, putting the hosts in front with a clinical finish for his sixth goal of the season.

Nusa had a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0 just four minutes later, yet his close-range attempt flew inches over the crossbar, throwing a rusty-looking Bayern a lifeline.

Despite Leipzig’s wasted chances, the visitors failed to muster a single clear-cut opening in the first 45 minutes, even though they made five shots, including two on target.

Yet, the script flipped at the start of the second half, with Bayern flying out of the traps in pursuit of an all-important equaliser on the back of Kimmich’s introduction.

It took only five minutes after the break for the reigning champions to draw level.

Dayot Upamecano intercepted a risky pass near Leipzig’s penalty area, with the rebound falling nicely for Serge Gnabry, who slotted the ball past Peter Gulaszi.

Gnabry’s goal blew the contest wide open, shifting the momentum firmly in Bayern’s favour and forcing Leipzig onto the back foot.

Harry Kane spent most of the game as a nearly anonymous figure. However, one of the most lethal strikers in world football stole the spotlight in the 67th minute.

The former Tottenham Hotspur captain brilliantly controlled Olise’s cross and had enough time and space to set his crosshairs before beating Gulsazi with a superb strike.

In doing so, Kane took his league tally for the season to a jaw-dropping 21 goals, solidifying his place at the top of the scoring leaderboard in Germany’s top flight.

Kane’s goal forced Leipzig to take more risks going forward, with the hosts coming agonisingly close to pulling one back through Yan Diomande. However, Manuel Neuer denied the in-demand winger with a stunning save.

If there’s a side capable of punishing missed chances, it’s Bayern.

Jonathan Tah was no stranger to scoring goals during his Bayer Leverkusen stint, but he had only scored once in 14 league games before today.

Yet, Olise’s corner-kick delivery was so delightful that the German centre-back had the simplest of tasks, rising unchallenged to head home and end his league goal drought in style.

Little did anyone know it would be the beginning of Bayern’s remarkable blitzkrieg.

Olise completed a hat-trick of assists in the 85th minute, setting up Aleksandar Pavlovic on a silver platter, with the deep-lying midfielder tapping the ball into an empty net from only a few yards out.

After engineering three goals for his teammates, the French winger crowned his astonishing cameo performance with a phenomenal left-footed finish, slamming the ball into the top corner.
