SV Werder Bremen bid farewell to a long-serving player as Michael Zetterer leaves the Green-Whites with immediate effect to join Eintracht Frankfurt. The move was confirmed on Monday by Peter Niemeyer, head of professional football at SVW. Both clubs have agreed to keep the details of the transfer undisclosed.

“After more than ten years at SV Werder, an opportunity came up for ‘Zetti’ to make a change – one that also includes playing in the Champions League. Given the overall package, we decided to agree to the transfer. Zetti has put himself at the service of the team for many years and has grown into a strong personality that we value highly. On the pitch, he has developed into a very good Bundesliga goalkeeper. We thank him for his long-standing commitment here and wish him all the best in this new chapter,” said Niemeyer.
“For me, Werder has never been just an employer. Bremen is and always will feel like a kind of home. I’ve experienced so many great moments here, but also some tough times,” recalled Zetterer. “In the end, these ten years have shaped me into the person I am today. I’m very grateful to the club for believing in me for so long. A special thanks goes to my goalkeeper coach Christian Vander, who always pushed me to improve. To my now former teammates, the staff, everyone at the club and of course the fans – I wish you all the very best.”
On the change between the posts, Niemeyer added: “With Mio Backhaus already in our squad, we have a goalkeeper of real quality in our ranks, which is another reason why we agreed to Zetti’s transfer. Mio is now our new number 1, and he has our full trust in taking on that responsibility. He has the qualities and the potential to be a reliable presence for us in the Bundesliga this season.”
Michael Zetterer joined Werder in January 2015 from SpVgg Unterhaching and initially featured for the U23s, making 30 appearances. Loan spells followed in Klagenfurt (14 games) and Zwolle (34 games), before the goalkeeper made his first-team debut in the 2021/22 campaign. He featured 11 times in the second tier on the way to promotion back to the Bundesliga. Since then, the 30-year-old has made 63 Bundesliga appearances for Werder, keeping 16 clean sheets.
