Argentine legend had been appointed for third stint in charge at La Bombonera ahead of the Club World Cup
Boca Juniors have announced the death of coach and club legend Miguel Angel Russo.
The Argentine passed away on Wednesday aged 69 following a long battle with cancer.
Russo was appointed for his third stint in charge at Boca ahead of the inaugural expanded Club World Cup in the United States this summer but later relinquished day-to-day managerial duties due to his illness.
“The Boca Juniors Athletic Club communicates with deep sadness the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo,” Boca said in a statement.
“Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and effort.
“We stand with his family and loved ones in this moment of pain. Forever with us, dear Miguel!”
Saturday’s clash between leaders Boca and third-place Barracas Central in the Argentine Primera Division has been postponed following Russo’s death.
Buenos Aires giants Boca are also opening the doors at their La Bombonera home on Thursday and Friday in order for fans to pay their respects to one of the club’s biggest icons.
Russo previously managed Boca in 2007 and again between 2020-21, famously winning the Copa Libertadores in 2007 following Juan Roman Riquelme’s double against Gremio in the final. He also sealed the Primera Division and Copa de la Liga Profesional double in 2020.
He had a lengthy and varied managerial career that began in 1989 at Lanus and included no fewer than 26 stops, including in Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Paraguay and Saudi Arabia.
Russo spent his entire time as a player at Estudiantes between 1975-88 and also earned 18 senior international caps for Argentina, scoring once.
“Farewell forever, dear Miguel,” Estudiantes wrote on social media.
“Club Estudiantes de La Plata deeply regrets the passing of Miguel Ángel Russo, prodigal son and footballing glory of our institution.
“We accompany his family and loved ones in this painful moment.”
