Morgan Rogers set for Chelsea medical ahead of £117m Aston Villa exit | OneFootball

Morgan Rogers is scheduled for a Chelsea medical on Monday ahead of completing a £117m move from Aston Villa. The Halesowen-born midfielder returned to the UK on Sunday with England after the World Cup.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, a deal was agreed over the weekend, with Chelsea’s offer fully guaranteed and approved by Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. Arsenal had long been viewed as the 23-year-old’s likeliest destination before Chelsea stepped in.

Middlesbrough will receive 20 per cent of the profit, around £20m, having sold Rogers to Villa for an initial £8m in January 2024. The deal represents excellent business for Villa, easing immediate pressure from UEFA’s financial restrictions.

Switzerland international Johan Manzambi has already arrived as his replacement for a club-record £52m. Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is close to completing a £38m move across the West Midlands. Villa are also working on AC Milan left-back Pervis Estupinan and have held talks with Bayern Munich over a loan for Portugal international Joao Palhinha, while funds will support a winger search that includes Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye.

Further exits are possible, with Premier League newcomers Hull City considering Leon Bailey. Lucas Digne is expected to finalise a return to PSG this week.

An Albion academy graduate who joined Manchester City for £4m in 2021, Rogers has been integral under Unai Emery. His 125th and final Villa game came in May’s Europa League final win over Freiburg, when he scored his 31st goal. He becomes the second Villa player sold for a British record fee after Jack Grealish, the first £100m English player five years ago, with £117m surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for his England team-mate Elliot Anderson this month.
