It’s the October international break, so a good time to look back at the season so far.
Stats site WhoScored had a look over the best performers of the season so far according to their ratings algorithm. In what’s been something of a shaky start for Chelsea following the Club World Cup and a lack of preseason, we weren’t expecting there to be a host of Blues in the mix here.
WhoScored’s team of the season so far.
There was one Chelsea player in there however: Moises Caicedo. The Ecuador star was brilliant for long stretches of last season, but really looks to have gone up another level now.
“Chelsea’s second most expensive signing ever has truly found his rhythm this season, earning a stellar 7.48 WhoScored rating,” they wrote.
“Caicedo leads all midfielders in the league for tackles (28) and interceptions (18), underlining his dominance in breaking up play. His ability to win the ball and distribute effectively has been vital in giving Chelsea control and balance, transforming their midfield dynamic.
“Offensively, he tops midfielders for goals with three strikes so far, including a thunderbolt against Liverpool, and ranks second for total passes among midfielders, highlighting his role as both a defensive anchor and a creative force.”
That’s been the beauty of Caicedo’s season so far. He’s established himself as a good defender already, but he’s now increasingly scoring goals and getting the ball forward.
His rocket to open the scoring on Saturday was memorable, but let’s not forget it was his quick over the shoulder pass between the lines which opened up the Liverpool midfield for the dramatic winner too.
He was on the edge of his own box, but he still made the crucial moment which ultimately led to the goal.
