According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, José Mourinho criticised Vinícius’s goal celebration and declined to condemn the alleged racist insult attributed to Benfica’s Prestianni. Kylian Mbappé later alleged the Argentine directed a monkey slur at Vinícius.
The Benfica coach was sent off on 85 minutes for protesting, having demanded a caution for Tchouameni after a foul by Vinícius. Mourinho also claimed the referee had instructions not to book Huijsen, Tchouameni and Carreras, who he said were already on cautions.
He said he had spoken to both players and would not take sides, adding he could not know whose account was true. Mourinho praised Vinícius’s strike, but argued the Brazilian should have celebrated with team-mates rather than goad 60,000 fans.
Vinícius posted that racists are cowards protected by those who should punish them, and said he was booked for his celebration without understanding why. He criticised a poorly executed protocol and said he would rather headlines focused on Real Madrid’s victory, but felt compelled to speak.
Mbappé said he confronted Prestianni on the pitch and accused him of racism, alleging Prestianni told Vinícius he was a monkey five times. He hoped UEFA would act, said the player hid his mouth with his shirt, and stressed the team backed Vinícius’s choice to continue.
There were flashpoints in the Da Luz tunnel after full-time. COPE reported Benfica president Rui Costa traded blows with a member of the Madrid delegation who was neither player nor coach.
