Inter captain Lautaro Martinez was always likely to have a tough task on his hands up against Alessandro Buongiorno.

The former Torino man has certainly been one of the outstanding defenders in Serie A this season. He has been a key reason for why Napoli’s defense has been so formidable.

Buongiorno’s combination of pace, strength, and anticipation have meant that he’s regularly been able to mark strikers out of matches.

At the same time, Buongiorno will have felt that marking Lautaro Martinez would be among his tougher assignments.

Even though the Argentine’s form has been up and down this season, his quality remains undeniable. Last season, Martinez was the top scorer for all of Serie A.

But in the end, it was Buongiorno who came on top. And he did so in decisive fashion.

In the first half, when the match was fairly even, Inter had their share of dangerous attacking moves.

But when the ball reached the penalty area, Martinez was unable to do anything with it. He could not find space, as Buongiorno inevitably got to the ball before him.,

Then in the second half, Inter desperately needed an out-ball. Napoli were penning them deep into their own half, and they tried to find the strikers with long balls.

But once again, it was Buongiorno who won out time and time again in these situations.
