Defender Stefan de Vrij could be back in training for Inter Milan today.

This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They report that the Dutchman is nearing an injury return ahead of Friday’s match against Atalanta.

De Vrij has been absent from Inter’s squad for their first two matches of the season.

The 32-year-old had made a relatively late return to training for the Nerazzurri.

Along with wingback Denzel Dumfries, de Vrij had been a regular starter for the Netherlands at the Euros this summer.

The Oranje made it all the way to the semifinals of that tournament. They went out to England.

That deep run at the Euros meant that de Vrij and Dumfries weren’t back in training until a couple weeks before the start of the season.

De Vrij did get out on the pitch in one friendly match for Inter this summer.

The former Lazio and Feyenoord defender played against Al-Ittihad in a friendly match.

However, de Vrij had to come off the pitch in the closing stages of that match due to an injury.

Stefan De Vrij Could Return To Training For Inter Milan Today

Tests confirmed that de Vrij had suffered a thigh strain during the friendly against Al-Ittihad.

Therefore, the 32-year-old has been on the sidelines for a few weeks. He has hardly rushed back to action.

De Vrij has missed out on Inter’s Serie A matches against Genoa and Lecce.

But the Dutch international was always likely to be targeting the following match for his return.

Inter host Atalanta on Friday. That will be their final match before the first international break of the season.

And de Vrij is coming back to fitness just in time for that match.

According to the Corriere, the 32-year-old could even return to training today.
