The debate about the power of player consultants in professional soccer is never-ending – and the topic is also omnipresent at FC Bayern. Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl has now given a personal insight into his experiences with the industry – and reported on an incident that had a lasting impact on him
When asked in an interview with SPORT1 whether there were any advisors he no longer wanted to have anything to do with, Eberl was frank: „When I started in 2008, I had a negotiation after which I resolved not to sit down at a table with this advisor again. I never wanted to negotiate with him again.“
Not quite. Eberl explained that he later questioned his resolution at the time in a self-critical manner. „When the anger had gone, I thought to myself: Max, be honest with yourself! If a consultant brings me a great player on good terms and I turn him down out of personal dislike, I’m hurting the club.“
The 52-year-old makes it clear how much he places his role as a functionary above personal sensitivities. Especially in times when transfer sums, salaries and consultant commissions continue to rise, a cool head is required: „It’s always about the club, not about me. Despite all the emotions, I always have to make the best rational decision for the club.“

Eberl thus underlines his pragmatic approach to squad planning at FC Bayern. Despite all the criticism of excessive demands or difficult negotiations, no doors will be closed at Säbener Straße – as long as a deal makes sporting and economic sense
After the recent public discussions surrounding consultancy fees and contract details, Eberl is showing that personal animosities should not play a role for him.
