Frenkie de Jong has become an irreplaceable figure in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona. After a challenging start, upon returning from an ankle injury, the Dutchman has gradually cemented his place in the German coach’s tactical setup.
The former Ajax star, who previously found it difficult to adapt to the holding midfield role, has flourished in Flick’s system. Playing alongside Pedri, he has been able to fully showcase his abilities in midfield and has overtaken Marc Casado in the team.
Given his growth, Barcelona have decided to act swiftly regarding his renewal and aim to finalise the extension soon, with his current deal expiring in June 2026.
As previously revealed, Deco met with De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, in February to present a new contract proposal. This renewal is a direct request from Hansi Flick, who wants to secure the midfielder’s future at the club.
The offer includes a three-year contract extension until 2029, with De Jong maintaining his current salary of approximately €18-19 million gross per season.

Now, as confirmed by SPORT in an update on last week’s report, Barcelona have identified a way to continue paying De Jong’s salary of €18-19 million on his new deal – with a slight adjustment.
The Catalans are willing to match the Dutchman’s financial demands, but only if a portion of his earnings is linked to performance-based incentives.
Essentially, while De Jong would receive a lower fixed salary than his current one, Barcelona would compensate by increasing performance-related bonuses based on factors such as appearances and titles won – ensuring his overall earnings remain at the same level.
The 27-year-old, for his part, fully trusts Flick and believes that the team is bound for great things under the German, which is why he wants to stay put at Barça.
Now, what remains is for the two parties to reach an agreement on the renewal terms to continue their partnership for a few more years.
