Eddie Howe has also revealed the latest on Bruno Guimaraes as the Newcastle captain nears a return to action

Gordon, Newcastle’s leading scorer this season with 15 goals in all competitions, was a surprise inclusion on the bench for the Champions League last-16 first leg tie against Barcelona on Tuesday night.

It was then revealed that the decision to drop Gordon was because of illness, even though he managed to train on the morning of the game.

The forward did make an appearance in the second half, replacing William Osula in the 67th minute as the Magpies were ultimately denied a famous win by a stoppage time Lamine Yamal penalty.

Howe will be keen to have the 25-year-old available to start at the Camp Nou in the second leg as Newcastle go in search of a result to secure progression into the Champions League quarter-finals.

Speaking on Friday morning, the Newcastle boss said: "He trained yesterday; he is fine.

“He was willing to play in the game; it was my decision not to start him as he had been ill that morning."

Howe also noted that he has a “healthy squad” ahead of the game at Stamford Bridge. Midfield pair Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley remain absent, although the club captain is closing in on a return.

"Bruno is back on Monday, his plan is he wants to come to Barcelona, not in a playing capacity, but to support the lads,” Howe added.

“He has been working incredibly hard on his recovery; I’d like to think by the time the international break has ended he will be back ready for us."
