Aston Villa beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday, recording their first win at St James’ Park in 21 years.

The hosts started on the front foot as Emiliano Martinez made a good save to deny Sandro Tonali from giving them the lead after he past three Villa players.

Nick Pope stood firm at the other end, sticking out his leg to deny Ollie Watkins from breaking the deadlock.

Emi Buendia opened the scoring with a fantastic strike, curling a long-range effort beyond Pope.

The Newcastle goalkeeper then had to quickly come off his line to deny Ian Maatsen, who was racing through on goal to latch onto a loose pass.

Martinez made another superb stop late in the first half, tipping Lewis Miley’s header away from goal, before comfortably saving Yoanne Wissa’s header just before the break.

The Magpies’ suffered a big blow before half-time, with Joelinton coming off due to injury.

Miley delivered a delightful cross into the path of Antony Gordon after the break, but he could not connect with it cleanly.

Villa responded quickly, but Pope parried Morgan Rogers’ shot away.

Watkins sealed the victory two minutes from time, heading Lucas Digne’s cross into the net.

The result was Villa’s first win at Newcastle since 2005, and took them four points behind leaders Arsenal.
