Newcastle United are now weighing up a summer transfer move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa after missing out on RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, according to The Athletic.

The Slovenian has opted to join Manchester United, and the St James’ Park club are now looking elsewhere. The Spain international is an option.

The Magpies admire the 21-year-old but have yet to table a bid for him as manager Eddie Howe continues to ponder his next move after several striking targets moved elsewhere.

The Porto star was close to moving to the Premier League last summer after Chelsea agreed a €40 million (£34.5m) deal with Atletico Madrid to sign him.

However, he subsequently joined Porto for €15m after the move fell through. Aghehowa signed a five-year deal with the Portuguese top-flight club, which contains a €100m release clause.

Suitors may need to activate it to have any chance of signing this summer, and whether Newcastle have plans to do so is unclear.

They had a bid of €82.5m (£71.5m) plus €2.5m in add-ons for Sesko accepted by Leipzig on Tuesday, and could be open to doing business for a similar fee for the Porto star.

Aghehowa notched 27 goals in 45 games across all competitions last term and could fit perfectly into the Newcastle attack as they look to challenge in the Champions League next term.

Man United also once had him on their radar before opting to look elsewhere, and a move to the Premier League could appeal to the former Atletico striker.

The Magpies will hope nobody pips them to him once they firm up interest after seeing the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Dean Huijsen, James Trafford and Sesko move elsewhere after attempting to sign them.
