Newcastle United have stepped up their chase for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and are viewed as likelier to complete a summer deal, according to TeamTalk. The report suggests a fee in the region of £55m to £64m.

Clubs in Spain and Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be keen, while Newcastle are viewed as a more realistic ‘stepping stone’ if Sandro Tonali departs after links with Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Sunderland explored a surprise move earlier this season as they considered pairing Camara with Senegal team-mate Habib Diarra at the Stadium of Light. The 22-year-old has stood out in Ligue 1 with Metz and Monaco.

“For now, I am really happy at Monaco. I’m not thinking about changing clubs but we will see what happens at the end of the season.” The Guardian published the interview in December.

Talk of a switch to Sunderland has faded, although Liverpool and Chelsea have also been mentioned.
