Newcastle United are being linked with a summer move for Monaco’s Lamine Camara, with claims they are now the likelier destination for the 22-year-old.
According to TeamTalk, the Magpies have stepped up their pursuit and are viewed as more likely to strike a deal worth around £55m to £64m, amid interest from clubs in Spain and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Sunderland were said to have asked Monaco about a surprise deal earlier this season as they sought to pair Camara with Senegal international team-mate Habib Diarra, despite attention from Manchester United and Arsenal.
“For now, I am really happy at Monaco. I feel really at ease here: the players are kind and ambitious, and I have a manager who trusts me. I follow the Premier League a lot – everyone does. I’m not thinking about changing clubs but we will see what happens at the end of the season.” He told The Guardian in December.
Links to Wearside have since cooled, though Liverpool and Chelsea have been mentioned as possible suitors. Newcastle are also portrayed as a more viable stepping stone if Sandro Tonali departs in the summer, the report said.
