The Toon teenagers took the lead before the half-hour mark at the Magpies' Little Benton Academy through Alfie Seldon's strike, the 16-year-old's third goal in his last four league games at under-18 level.

Middlesbrough were reduced to ten men within the opening two minutes of the restart as Lucas Harrison was shown a straight red card for violent conduct before, one minute later, Newcastle's youngsters doubled their lead as midfielder Matty Taylor fired home from Seldon's through pass.

The visitors halved their deficit in the dying stages following Will Haselhurst's stoppage-time effort but Chris Moore's side held firm to prevail against their North east neighbours, lying five points adrift of league leaders Manchester City in third place.
