OM went out to Toulouse on penalties in the Coupe de France quarter-finals on Wednesday, a 2-2 draw followed by a 4-3 shootout. With PSG already out, another route to a first trophy since 2012 closed.

According to L'Équipe, it was the latest in a run of near-misses. In 2022, shorn of PSG, OM visited Nice, led via a Melvin Bard own goal, but Amine Gouiri equalised, Justin Kluivert scored twice and teed up Andy Delort for 4-1.

That spring also brought the Europa Conference League semi-final. After Karabagh, Basel and PAOK, Marseille lost 3-2 at Feyenoord, then could not break through in a subdued 0-0 at the Vélodrome as Dimitri Payet went off early. Roma beat the Dutch side in the final.

In 2023, Igor Tudor’s side edged PSG 2-1 in a thrilling last 16, Ruslan Malinovskyi scoring, and were installed as favourites. Annecy, 11th in Ligue 2 and just beaten 5-1 at Sochaux, came to the Vélodrome, fell behind to Jordan Veretout, then struck twice in six minutes. Alexis Sanchez missed a late penalty, François-Régis Mughe forced extra time, but Nuno Tavares and Leonardo Balerdi failed in the shootout as Annecy advanced to face Toulouse.

The Trophée des champions offered little relief. PSG won 2-1 in January 2021, then in Kuwait OM led until the fifth minute of added time when Gonçalo Ramos equalised, before Hamed Junior Traoré and Matt O'Riley missed in a 2-2, 4-1 shootout defeat.
