According to L'Équipe, Nicolas de Tavernost has confirmed he is leaving his role as director general of LFP Media, the League’s commercial arm, on Thursday afternoon, calling the decision irrevocable and citing a lack of support.
He announced his exit during the LFP board meeting, and will remain only until a successor is appointed. Suggestions he might be bluffing have been dispelled.
The situation escalated when beIN Sports pipped Ligue 1+ to rights for the next World Cup, even though the LFP's platform had signed with FIFA for pay-TV coverage of all 104 matches for nearly €20 million, comprising €17 million in rights and €2.5 million in production costs. beIN Sports is part of beIN Media Group, which, like PSG, is chaired by Nasser al-Khelaïfi.
De Tavernost considered defending Ligue 1+ through action against FIFA, but he does not have backing for that route. FFF president Philippe Diallo signalled it was time to move on earlier on Thursday.
His departure plunges French football back into crisis, a familiar pattern.
