Borussia Dortmund enjoy an unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season with a draw against St. Pauli on opening day preceding successive wins against Union Berlin, Heidenheim and Wolfsburg.
Die Schwarzgelben’s latest win was courtesy of a Karim Adeyemi wondergoal, but what’s more impressive is their disciplined performance. Gregor Kobel and his defence – often makeshift given injuries at the back – has kept three consecutive clean sheets.
Speaking to DAZN after Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Wolfsburg, Kovač commended his team.
“I’m delighted that we won, that it was a clean sheet and that Schlotti came through 90 minutes. We were fresh, we were energetic and we gave pretty much nothing away. The Maxi Arnold free-kick was, in my opinion, offside. We deservedly won the match; we would of course have liked to win by a greater margin against a good, structured Wolfsburg team. The lads are continuing to improve, even if there are setbacks from time to time. But we are consistently taking steps forward.”
Nico Schlotterbeck also marked his return to the squad with his first start since suffering a meniscus injury in April. When asked, Kovač commended Dortmund’s medical team.
“For me, it is important that players are healthy after an injury and come back fit. That has worked out brilliantly in Schlotti’s case. Compliments to the rehabilitation team. That’s how I envisage it going when a long-term injury absentee returns.”
