Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s squad for this summer’s World Cup, capping a strong end to the campaign with Sunderland.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old forward, capped 12 times, has earned a first World Cup selection for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

He joined from Anderlecht for around £17.5 million late in the January window and has been gradually introduced to Regis Le Bris’ plans. Angulo made nine appearances, featuring in the final three matches with starts at Everton and at home to Chelsea, as Sunderland qualified for the Europa League.

Earlier in the campaign, Le Bris said he thought Angulo could make a success of his time in England. He said the winger has the attributes to be a strong Premier League performer, while stressing that adaptation remains key. He cited a tough outing at Bournemouth but praised the response, adding that starting is different from coming off the bench and he hoped it would be good soon.

Ecuador’s squad also includes Moises Caicedo and Kendry Paez in midfield, with Enner Valencia among the forwards. Angulo joins an attacking group featuring Kevin Rodriguez.
