Nilson Angulo has been named in Ecuador’s squad for this summer’s World Cup after an impressive end to the season at Sunderland.

According to Sunderland Echo, the 22-year-old forward, capped 12 times, has earned his first World Cup call for the tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Angulo joined from Anderlecht late in the January window for a fee of around £17.5 million and has been integrated into Regis Le Bris’s first-team plans since.

He made nine appearances, featured in the final three games, and started at Everton away and Chelsea at home as Sunderland qualified for the Europa League next season.

Earlier in the season, Le Bris said he thought Angulo could have a big impact but stressed adaptation to a new team and level. He pointed to the league’s physical demands and a tough Bournemouth experience, praising the player’s response. He added that coming off the bench differs from starting and hoped that would come good soon.
