Noa Lang suffered a partial finger amputation after colliding with an advertising hoarding during Liverpool v Galatasaray in the Champions League at Anfield. The incident overshadowed Liverpool’s comeback to reach the quarter-finals.
Liverpool overturned the tie with a blistering second half, as Szoboszlai, Ekitike, Gravenberch and Salah scored to complete the turnaround and book their place in the last eight.
In the closing stages, Lang tried to shield the ball to keep it in, but it crossed the byline. As he checked his run, he braced his right hand on the boards and suffered the injury.
He went down immediately and received lengthy treatment. With severe pain and in shock, he was given oxygen, then carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital, where some sources indicated he underwent surgery.
Galatasaray said on social media that he suffered a serious cut to his right thumb and was scheduled to have an operation in Liverpool within hours, with the club’s medical team present.
Head coach Okan Buruk said after the match that Lang was on his way to hospital and that an immediate operation could be required, with a decision to be taken quickly if so.
The night ended bittersweet at Anfield, jubilation tempered by deep concern for Lang’s condition. A definitive medical bulletin is awaited, with his recovery now the overriding focus.
