Barcelona started their Champions League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Premier League side Newcastle United at St James’ Park, in what was a difficult encounter for the Catalans. But in the end, Marcus Rashford’s second half brace was enough for the three points.
As per Marca, Hansi Flick spoke to Movistar+ on the match, and he credited his side for their dogged performance in Newcastle.
“It’s very important to start with these three points here. The team was fantastic today. We had told them that the first 15 minutes it was important to keep a clean sheet. For me the whole game was very good. Also after those 15 minutes in the first half we had 64% possession. It has been very positive. Maybe we have had too many mistakes but I am very happy.”
Flick was also very impressed with Rashford’s display, particularly with the second goal he scored at St James’ Park.
“He scored two beautiful goals. The header was very good, but the second one, too. The important thing is that he gains confidence. We are helping him.
“I’m not surprised by his performance. I said it yesterday, he’s a fantastic player, he’s very talented. His skills and finishing are very good. In the first half, they had chances and did not finish. In the second, we did. For a striker it is important to score. He took advantage of the chances. We needed a player like this.”

Flick also saved special praise for Barcelona midfielder pair Frenkie de Jong and Pedri, who played a big role in ensuring that Newcastle were not able to take away points away from the Catalans in this one.
“With Pedri and Frenkie it’s not easy to put pressure on us. I think today they both played a very good game. I’m happy that they play with that confidence on this pitch. We are a very young team. What I can see is that the team plays with confidence and that’s very important.”
