Nottingham Forest announced on Thursday the death of John Robertson, the Scottish winger, aged 72.

The club said in a statement that he was a true Forest legend whose unrivalled talent, humility and dedication would never be forgotten.

Robertson won 28 caps for Scotland, scoring eight goals, and spent 14 seasons with Forest from 1970 to 1983, then again in 1985-1986.

He helped secure promotion in 1977, then won the league title in 1978. That same year he delivered the League Cup by scoring the only goal of the replayed final against Liverpool from the penalty spot.

Forest retained the trophy in 1979, beating Manchester United 3-2 in the final.

In Europe he set up Trevor Francis’s header in the 1979 European Cup final against Malmö, a 1-0 win, then scored the only goal of the 1980 showpiece against Hamburg, again 1-0.

Manager Brian Clough often teased Robertson’s stocky frame and heavy smoking, yet revered his talent, likening him to Picasso and to an artist when given a yard of grass.
