Nottingham Forest discovered their potential Europa League play-off opponents after a 4-0 win over Ferencvaros, with Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos awaiting.
They went into the City Ground tie already assured of progress beyond the league phase, though the format was still to be decided. An unlikely combination of results was needed for Sean Dyche’s side to make the top eight and reach the round of 16 directly.
A two-legged route now awaits. Forest finished 13th in the standings, will be seeded for the play-off round and will host the second leg.
The draw is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland, at noon UK time.
Unlike the league phase, sides from the same national association can be paired, and repeat meetings from the league phase are possible. Pairings are based on final positions, creating four seeded pairs from positions 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-16, and four unseeded pairs from 17-18, 19-20, 21-22 and 23-24.
First legs are set for Thursday 19 February, with returns on 26 February. Match dates and any fixture reversals can be decided case by case under competition principles, and the full schedule will be confirmed after the draw.
