Lazio have finally confirmed Gennaro Gattuso as head coach. The club said in a statement it welcomed the 48-year-old and was confident his experience, professionalism and determination would help achieve its sporting objectives.
The Biancocelesti endured a difficult campaign, with Maurizio Sarri and president Claudio Lotito clashing in the media. His exit became inevitable, and the parties terminated their contract, paving the way for Sarri’s appointment at Atalanta.
Lazio had already struck an agreement with Gattuso, who arrived at Formello weeks ago to plan alongside Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani. Formal confirmation did not arrive until Tuesday.
The statement did not reveal contract terms. Gattuso has likely signed a one-year deal with an option for a second, and he is expected to earn €1.5 million per season.
Despite limited technical ability, he enjoyed a decorated playing career, winning the Champions League twice with AC Milan and the 2006 World Cup with Italy.
His managerial record has brought more lows than highs, including spells at Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Olympique Marseille. His only trophy is the Coppa Italia in June 2020, and his most recent job with Italy ended in a playoff defeat to Bosnia that cost World Cup qualification. He will seek a reset at Lazio, although financial constraints could make the task tricky.
