Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich extend their expiring contracts to stay one more year at FC Bayern. With Jonas Urbig having a long-term deal with the club, the double signings effectively ruled out Alexander Nübel’s return from VfB Stuttgart loan for next season.
Neuer is also in discussion to return to the national team setup for the World Cup. “FC Bayern has had a string of truly exceptional goalkeepers throughout its history, and Manuel Neuer holds a very special place among them,” said the club president Herbert Hainer as he praised the two-time treble winner.
Bayern’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen also called the 40-year-old shot-stopper “one of the best signings in our club’s history”. Max Eberl confirmed Urbig will have more chances in what could very well be Neuer’s final season before retirement.
“Manuel Neuer, Sven Ulreich and Jonas Urbig form a goalkeeping team in which everyone has their role. Manuel and Sven will continue to support Jonas on his path to becoming the future of FC Bayern,” said the board member for sport.
Sporting director Christopher Freund also commented on the matter. “All three are great characters who together form a unique team, the likes of which cannot be found at any other European club.”
This will be Neuer’s 16th season at FC Bayern. He’s been the captain since 2017 at the club, where he closed on his 600th appearance. “I took my time over the decision and am now very happy. I enjoy going to Säbener Straße every day, and I’m performing to the best of my ability,” said the World Cup champion after penning the new deal.
Ulreich has won 21 trophies with FC Bayern since joining from Stuttgart in 2015. However, the 37-year-old only played 104 games for the club over a decade. “I’m really delighted. I’m still really keen on football. We’ve got a fantastic squad with a brilliant coaching team, and it’s great fun every day. I’m sure we’ll be in with a chance of achieving everything again next season.”
