Premier League side Newcastle United officially announced the signing of defender Malick Thiaw on a permanent deal from Milan on Tuesday night following a three-year stint in San Siro.

Reports from Sky Sport Italia claim that the deal was closed for a total fee of €40m including bonuses, with €36m thought to be in fixed fees.

The 24-year-old has reportedly put pen to paper on a four-year contract, which will see him through until the summer of 2029, at which stage the defender will be 28 years of age.

Newcastle have confirmed that Thiaw will wear the no.12 shirt for his first season at St. James’ Park.

“I’m really excited to join this massive club. I can’t wait to start training and to get to know my new teammates and all the staff,” Thiaw said in a statement on the Newcastle website.

“The gaffer showed me his vision and what he wants to do with me as a player and the club itself, which is really exciting.

“I think Newcastle speaks for itself. It’s a great club, a big club with passionate fans who I can’t wait to see at St. James’ Park.”

Head coach Eddie Howe added: “We’re really pleased to have Malick on board. He’s a player I’ve admired for a long time and somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options. somebody who will add real quality to our defensive options.

“Malick is still young but brings valuable experience of Champions League football, as well as playing in the Bundesliga and Serie A, which is a major positive for us as we return to Europe this season.”

Thiaw becomes the sixth Milan first-team player to be sold this summer, following the previous departures of Tijjani Reijnder for Manchester City, Theo Hernandez for Al-Hilal, Emerson Royal to Flamengo, Alvaro Morata to Como and Marco Sportiello for Atalanta.

The Rossoneri have also bid farewell to Pierre Kalulu, who has seen his loan move turned into a permanent deal at Juventus. Warren Bondo has left to join Cremonese on loan, as has Filippo Terracciano. Francesco Camarda has gone on loan to Lecce, Tommaso Pobega to Bologna and Lorenzo Colombo to Genoa.

Luka Jovic, Davide Calabria and Alessandro Florenzi all left the club on free transfers at the end of their contracts.
