It is only a matter of time until Kylian Mbappé (26) breaks Olivier Giroud’s (39) goalscoring record for France. The latter retired from international football after Euro 2024, but with 57 goals, remains Les Bleus all-time top-scorer.
However, at the age of just 26, France captain Mbappé is not far behind. The Real Madrid forward currently has 52 goals to his name and, speaking prior to Friday night’s match against Azerbaijan, he joked that he could even break Giroud’s record in the upcoming match, given the big scorelines between these two sides in previous encounters.
Whether it happens tonight, during this international break, in the next, or in early 2026, the record will be broken; Giroud is resigned to that, as he told RMC Sport show After Foot in an interview on Thursday night.
“Of course, he’ll beat me. He has at least another five, seven, or even more years in the France national team. I hope that he even reaches 100 goals,” said Giroud. The Lille OSC forward’s record stands for now, but perhaps not for too much longer. In the same interview, he added that he would only return for Les Bleus in the event that there was a severe injury crisis and Didier Deschamps needed him to fill in.
