FLW's Charlton Athletic Fan Pundit Emma speaks on the club's goalscoring problem following their promotion from League One.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Charlton Athletic ended their five-year exodus from the Championship earlier this year, as the Addicks beat Leyton Orient at Wembley to secure promotion from League One.
As can be expected for newly-promoted sides, Charlton have not had it easy in their opening four matches since their return. Since an opening-day win against Watford, Nathan Jones' side have picked up just one point and have scored twice in the second tier thus far.
The situation at the Valley is a strange one, though. The club were ambitious over the summer, adding a fantastic mix of youth and experience as they prepared to tackle the Championship again after they were sent back to the third tier in 2020.
League One Golden Boot winner Charlie Kelman was added to the group, alongside Tanto Olaofe, with the former making just two starts of a possible four under Jones before the international break.
With only rock-bottom Sheffield United scoring less than the Addicks thus far, Football League World's Charlton Fan Pundit Emma Harknett acknowledged the situation at hand ahead of a crucial South London derby against Millwall this Saturday.
"I would probably say scoring goals," said Emma when asked by FLW what the most significant concern at the club is at the moment.
"We have obviously signed some real talent over the summer in Charlie Kelman and Tanto Olaofe, but we are not playing a system that suits them, and they are not getting a fair shot in the team," added Emma, after Kelman has started just twice in the Championship under Jones. At the same time, Olaofe has not appeared earlier than the 80th minute from the bench.
"We have been playing Tyreece Campbell and Miles Leaburn up top, and it just isn't working; we aren't scoring.
"We invested heavily in strikers over the summer, especially in a Golden Boot winner - you would think that he would be the starting striker! Obviously, Charlie [Kelman] didn't have a full pre-season, so we need to look into getting him more involved.
"I do like the look of Tanto [Olaofe] as well. I would love to see him get some more minutes, and being an ex-Millwall boy, it would be great to see him play this Saturday."
Concluding, Emma reiterated her concerns: "The striking department frustrates me at the moment, and somehow Jones has to find a system to be able to fit the strikers mentioned in."
All things considered, Charlton have not got off to the worst start considering their status as a newly promoted side.
The performances have been there, and the tally of just four goals conceded is extremely positive given the fact that they have picked up a point against Bristol City, lost against Leicester as a result of a stunning Abdul Fatawu effort, and fallen to a QPR side deemed as a dark horse in their last three since the win against Watford.
Jones has proven throughout his career in the EFL that he can get a side organised and push them to punch above their weight, no matter the division.
Kelman found the back of the net 23 times in League One last term, and could well be the man to add the goals for the Addicks.
Olaofe does not carry the goalscoring pedigree of Kelman; however, he is undoubtedly a presence and someone that Jones will have in mind if he is to switch things up in the final third.
Charlton's performances have been there. However, the Championship can be ever-so-brutal, as they found out in 2020 when they were cruelly relegated on the final day of the season. If the Addicks are to steer clear of relegation troubles and look towards a mid-table finish, added goals will be massive moving forward.
