Palmeiras title-winning striker begins coaching career in Paraguay

After announcing his retirement as a professional player, Lucas Barrios was confirmed today as the new coach of Sportivo Luqueño-PAR, the club where he ended his career on the pitch. The change marks the beginning of a new phase in the career of the former striker, whose legacy as a player includes significant achievements and standout moments in South American and European football.

Barrios' Stint at Palmeiras

Lucas Barrios had a considerable stint at Palmeiras between 2015 and 2017. At Verdão, he played about 44 games, scored 13 goals, and contributed with two assists.

During this period, he helped the club to win important titles:

2015 Brazil Cup: Barrios shone in decisive moments of the competition, including a standout performance against Fluminense in the semifinals, with goals that were fundamental.
2016 Brazilian Championship: even with internal competition for the center forward position (for example, with Gabriel Jesus gaining more projection), Barrios contributed to Palmeiras maintaining enough regularity to be champion.

Sportivo Luqueño: the new challenge

Sportivo Luqueño, a traditional Paraguayan club from Luque, is known for its passionate fan base and history in local football, although it is not among the giants of Paraguay - like Olimpia or Cerro Porteño.

In recent championships, Luqueño has had a modest performance, with irregular results, including in the Paraguayan Primera División and in the international competitions it competes in.
