Football often works in cycles, and at Barcelona, timing can change everything.

As the club prepares for its upcoming La Liga clash against Villarreal, circumstances have opened the door for Frenkie de Jong to step back into the spotlight at a crucial moment in the season.

The key factor is the physical situation of Pedri. The midfielder is expected to miss the match due to muscular overload, and Barcelona are determined not to take risks.

Pedri remains a non-negotiable figure in the team when fully fit, but the coaching staff is wary of pushing him too far and risking a longer absence.

Opportunity for De Jong

As reported by SPORT, this scenario presents a clear opportunity for De Jong.

Over recent weeks, the midfield hierarchy at Barcelona has quietly shifted.

With Pedri usually guaranteed a starting role, Hansi Flick has often opted to partner Eric Garcia as the second pivot, leaving De Jong on the sidelines or limited to short appearances.

However, if Pedri is rested, De Jong would be the natural choice to line up alongside Garcia in the double pivot.

De Jong’s recent journey has not been smooth. A bout of illness disrupted his rhythm, and before the Copa del Rey tie against CD Guadalajara, he had failed to start five matches in a row.

Against Osasuna, he was restricted to just 16 minutes, a marginal role that highlighted his dip in prominence.

The cup match against Guadalajara, though, marked a turning point. Starting again allowed him to regain confidence and show that he is ready when called upon.

Now, with Pedri’s discomfort still a concern, Flick has a trusted option waiting.

The trip to Villarreal carries weight beyond the usual three points. Facing a direct rival early can shape momentum heading into the new year.

For De Jong, it could also be a defining game, a chance to take command of the midfield and remind everyone why he remains such a valuable asset to Barcelona.
