Jean-Philippe Krasso’s late penalty cancelled out Sofiane Diop’s opener as OGC Nice and Paris FC saw out a draw (1-1) in a match marred by homophobic chanting from the home fans.
With just two wins in their eight matches so far this season, Nice came into this one in need of a confidence boost. Paris FC boasted an identical record (two wins, three defeats); it suggested that there was little between these sides. It seemed that way for much of the first half.
Le Gym have struggled with chance creation this season, and the same was the case here. Another issue has been the goalkeeper. Yehvann Diouf has not impressed since joining in the summer, and his shaky start to life at the Allianz Riviera continued as he played the ball straight out to Pierre Lees-Melou from a goal-kick. It is a mistake for which they should have been punished. Moses Simon’s weakly struck effort spared Diouf’s blushes.
Just moments later, Nice took the lead. Mohamed-Ali Cho provided the moment of inspiration, threading through Sofiane Diop to poke past Obed Nkambadio. The Paris FC goalkeeper was forced into action again moments later, but this time he was equal to Jonathan Clauss’ effort, making a brilliant save with his feet.
Les Parisiens were certainly a match for Nice, and they seized the upper hand in the second half, managing to sustain periods of possession within the opposition half. But it was in transitional moments that they looked the most dangerous.
Diouf made up for his previous error by saving well from former AS Monaco and Olympique Lyonnais forward Willem Geubbels. The Paris FC striker had a second bite of the apple but saw his rebound deflected wide by Kojo Peprah Oppong.
Ilan Kebbal, uncharacteristically quiet, then had space to dribble into. With just Moise Bombito to beat in order to bear down on Diouf’s goal, the playmaker was comfortably dispossessed by the Canada international, making his first appearance of the season.
Nice looked to be heading for a tightly-contested win before an interruption due to homophobic chants coming from the Nice ultras, the Populaire Sud, disrupted the rhythm of the game. The referee gave two warnings for the chants, the second of which was finally heard.
But just moments later, Paris FC equalised. Bombito left out an arm, and the ball struck it. Krasso did the rest from the spot, leaving Diouf rooted to the spot. Les Aiglons had late chances. Antoine Mendy forced a save from Nkambadio, and the Frenchman then made a more impressive finger-tip save from Isak Jansson moments later. A late Jonathan Clauss free-kick, which eluded everyone and almost nestled into the far post, provided a late scare for the Paris FC goal, but they held on as both teams registered their first draw of the season.
Yehvann Diouf – 3
The goalkeeper’s save from Geubbels somewhat redeems his score, but he was overall unconvincing, nervy, and that spreads to his defenders. His distribution was poor, once again, and he lacked his usual authority when coming out to claim crosses. His confidence is low at the moment, and it shows.
Kojo Peprah Oppong – 5
Moise Bombito – 6
Antoine Mendy – 4
Ali Abdi – 4
Replaced by Melvin Bard (5) at half-time.
Charles Vanhoutte – 5
Salis Abdul Samed – 4
Replaced by Hicham Boudaoui (N/A) at half-time. The Algerian was forced off with an injury on the 78-minute mark.
Jonathan Clauss – 6
Sofiane Diop – 6
Terem Moffi – 3
The Nigerian is still struggling following his return from an ACL injury. Every decision he makes is rushed and is invariably the incorrect one.
Mohamed-Ali Cho – 6
It was his threaded ball through that found Diop for Nice’s opener. Having got an assist, he almost had another, going around the outside and finding Clauss. Le Gym lacked a creative spark throughout, but when they did accelerate and pick their way through the Paris FC defence, he was the man central to that.
Ilan Kebbal – 5
Willem Geubbels – 4
Maxime Lopez – 7
The man who once again pulled the strings, dropping deep, providing overloads, dragging his team up the pitch, picking out his teammates’ runs. In possession, there is no player more important for Paris FC.
