Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time on Sunday in New York, a World Cup final staged amid a distinctly American sense of show. According to L'Équipe, the crowd paid more attention to the football than to the trappings around it.

Tickets came at a premium and patience was needed, with queues snaking around MetLife Stadium four hours before kick-off in fierce heat.

Entry later flowed and the stands were already well populated for a short closing ceremony, which drew little interest before the teams warmed up.

At half-time, Brazilian greats Ronaldinho and Ronaldo joined Madonna for the show.

The evening delivered plenty of gloss, yet the contest between Spain and Argentina held centre stage.
