Northumbria Police said they have launched an investigation into reported racist messages sent after Sunderland’s match against Fulham.
The force has received a complaint about social media messages, is working with Sunderland and the UK Football Policing Unit, and condemned discrimination as unacceptable in society and local communities. It has not confirmed the identity of the reported victim.
Sunderland condemned vile online racist abuse aimed at Romaine Mundle following the Premier League fixture.
The club is working with the relevant authorities and online platforms to identify those responsible and will pursue the strongest action available. It reaffirmed there is no place for racism and that Mundle has its full support.
Those responsible do not represent the club, its values or its community and are not welcome on Wearside.
