Manchester City fan and Oasis musician Noel Gallagher has been sent a special jersey by Polish side Lech Poznan this month to commemorate the two clubs’ 15th UEFA Europa League meeting anniversary.
City faced Lech Poznan – the club after which the Etihad Stadium’s famous ‘Poznan’ is named – twice in their 2010-11 UEFA Europa League campaign, with the club remembering their famous visit to the home of the Blues 15 years on.
Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher is renowned for his lifelong affiliation to Manchester City and callouts to concert attendees to ‘do the Poznan’ – a gesture of camaraderie embedded deep into those associated with the blue side of Manchester over the years.
In a heartfelt letter to Gallagher, Polish side Lech Poznan have commemorated the 15th anniversary of their UEFA Europa League games against Manchester City and expressed their gratitude to the Oasis star for his role in spreading the influence of the ‘Poznan’ in England.
The letter reads: “Dear Noel, In front of you lies a very special gift – a personalised KKS Lech Poznań jersey with your name and the number ’12’, which in our club is reserved for the fans – our ‘twelfth player’.
“As you probably know, we have quite a lot in common. Just like you, as a devoted Manchester City supporter, we – the fans and staff of Lech – love cheering for our teams, especially when during ‘the Poznań’!
“This year marks the 15th anniversary of the UEFA Europa League ties between our clubs – the very moment when Manchester, and soon after the whole of the UK and the world, discovered how we celebrate football in our city.
“The term ‘the Poznań’ even made its way into the Cambridge Dictionary! We are truly proud that such a great club as Manchester City helped to spread the name of our city and team in such a remarkable way.
“We’ve seen the recordings from your concerts where you encourage Oasis fans to join in and do ‘the Poznań’ – and we have to say, it really makes a huge impression!
“Perhaps one day you would like to visit our city as well – either to play a show here or to experience firsthand the unique atmosphere of a Lech match at our stadium.
“Please feel free to wear the jersey, share it, or simply keep it as a small token of connection between you and our club. With respect and best wishes, KKS Lech Poznań.”
Gallagher and all those associated with Manchester City have at some point in their fandom joined in to a rendition of the Poznan at home games, with City fans firmly integrating the same as part of their own Mancunian culture.
