Celtic central defender Maik Nawrocki is apparently interesting Polish top-flight side, Pogoń Szczecin according to Polish publication wSzczecinie.pl.

The report states the Polish club are currently trying to secure a loan deal this summer but has not stated if this would have an option to buy attached or indeed if the player has encouraged the interest in any way.

On one hand the transfer of Nawrocki would make a lot of sense. Given Celtic paid £4.5m for the defender two years ago, and he has only made 18 appearances, it may make sense to at least get Nawrocki in the shop window rather than rattling around the squad picking up a handful of minutes here and there.

The destination of course in theory makes sense for Nawrocki but it would take a big change in tack from the players representatives if this deal was to go through.

In January, and the previous summer, there was interest in Nawrocki from Poland as he had made a good impression whilst playing for Legia Warsaw and the size of transfer fee paid by Celtic was big news.

However, despite the chance to return home being mooted for the player, it appears his wish, if he left Celtic, was to move to a big 5 league or at least to a club with a similar profile to Celtic. As such offers made to the player were rebuffed. It will therefore have to take a change in outlook for this deal to go ahead.

Instead Nawrocki may feel his appearances towards the end of the season including in a Glasgow Derby and at Pittodrie may embolden the players resolve to remain and push for more appearances.

When played on the right side of central defence, in a 5-1 victory at Aberdeen, Nawrocki scored and looked impressive defensively alongside progressing the ball from defence and passing the ball between the lines with good accuracy.

With Cameron Carter-Vickers struggling to play the three games in eight days, and reportedly managing a long-term injury, it would certainly give Nawrocki an opportunity to play, but that is very much dependent on his manager.

Brendan Rodgers doesn’t give the impression he fully trusts Nawrocki, but it would be interesting to see if that outlook has changed since his late season appearances.

Previously it was stated Nawrocki was perhaps a lacking in recovery pace and lacking in numbers for his duels, but the player has also not had his injury and illness worries to seek in his time with Celtic and it’s not unusual for central defenders to mature a little later than attacking players.

With Nawrocki now 24, and without a real run of games to be fully judged on, there may well be scope to use the Polish defender as a suitable understudy to CCV, with the scope to be able to also supply cover to the left side of central defence.

If Celtic do go into the market for a central defender, with Serbian international Veljko Milosavijevic, the only real link so far then you could see Maik Nawrocki moving on, however, it may be Brendan Rodgers would prefer a replacement in the door before authorising Nawrocki’s exit.
