Manchester City reportedly have their eye on two more of the Premier League’s top performers, having recruited Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January.
The Etihad Stadium hierarchy are continuing to map out their long-term squad evolution, with the 2026 summer window showing no signs of being a quieter market as part of Pep Guardiola’s next phase.
Following targeted additions in all areas of the pitch over the last 12 months, attention is now once again turning toward midfield reinforcements and specialist full-back options – areas that have been repeatedly highlighted in recent reports.
City’s midfield planning has been one of the most persistent reports, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson emerging as a leading candidate. Guardiola’s admiration for the England international as been mentioned often, while the club’s extensive scouting pairs with a growing belief he could become a cornerstone of the next-generation City midfield.
However, Forest’s expected £100 million-plus valuation and the possibility of that fee rising further after the 2026 World Cup may yet see City prepare alternatives, with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton maintaining his place among the names discussed in the media.
Alongside that midfield focus, right-back has been identified as another area of strategic interest, despite the ever-developing performances of the impressive Matheus Nunes in the role.
Now, according to the information of iPaper’s Mark Douglas and Pete Hall, Manchester City want to sign Elliot Anderson in order to fill a critical central midfield vacancy in the summer, and believe they can beat Manchester United to his signature.
Elsewhere, it is highlighted that those within the Etihad Stadium are also investigating right-back targets, with Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Feyenoord’s Givairo Read among those of interest.
If Anderson becomes available, the player’s reported preference for a move has already been said to be the Etihad Stadium, although no further reports have corroborated that early information.
With the club already assessing options and identifying specific profiles for right-back, a move in that area may not be as dependent on external factors such as the World Cup or player preference, with both Kayode and Read fitting the mould of young, technically proficient stars.
As things stand, Manchester City’s summer 2026 plans appear to be taking clear shape in honing in on a marquee central midfielder, supported by targeted additions in defence.
