The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby was briefly halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse from the crowd directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. In a statement, the league said its on-field anti-discrimination protocol was applied, it offers full support to the player and both clubs, and that racism has no place in football, adding that work with stakeholders and authorities continues to ensure stadiums are inclusive and welcoming for all.

Play resumed at St James’ Park, where Sunderland came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 and complete a derby double.

Anthony Gordon put Newcastle ahead early on.

Chemsdine Talbi levelled 12 minutes after the restart.

Brian Brobbey then struck in the 90th minute to seal victory, his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th away Premier League goal of the campaign.
