The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park was halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.
The league said the stoppage followed its on-field anti-discrimination protocol, that the incident will be fully investigated, offered support to the player and both clubs, and stressed it will continue working with stakeholders and authorities to keep stadiums inclusive, and reiterated that racism has no place in football or wider society.
On the pitch, Sunderland came from behind to win 2-1 and complete a derby double over Newcastle United.
Anthony Gordon gave Newcastle an early lead, before Chemsdine Talbi levelled 12 minutes after the restart.
Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to seal it, his sixth of the season and only Sunderland’s 10th Premier League goal away from home this campaign.
