Puma Rodríguez was decisive in Vasco’s comeback against São Paulo, becoming the club’s leading scorer this season. He said his knack for goals comes from playing as a striker in childhood.

The Uruguayan has four goals in 18 appearances, 13 as a starter. He scored from the spot to level before Vasco struck again to seal victory. He moved top of the charts following the departures of Vegetti, Rayan and Coutinho. According to Globo.com, he is now the team’s designated penalty taker.

Rodríguez said he and Renato Gaúcho agreed that, when he is on the pitch, he takes penalties, adding that he practises them regularly and relishes scoring. He admitted a scare as the goalkeeper went for the ball and felt a touch of luck helped.

Renato Gaúcho praised the full-back’s personality and confidence, traits he has demanded from the squad. He noted the penalty came in a hostile, pressure moment with Vasco behind, and that the equaliser set up a vital three-point win.

The coach also stressed Vasco have two right-backs at starter level, saying Puma matches Paulo Henrique. He explained Puma came on after PH suffered a heavy knock to his knee, adding there is another game on Tuesday.

Rodríguez called the duel a healthy fight and said they have featured together, including against Cruzeiro, which remains an option. He dedicated the win to supporters who honoured Roberto Dinamite, who would have turned 72 on Monday.
