Rafa Silva could face Alverca for the first time, the club where he spent much of his development, in a reunion rich in symbolism. Signed late in the winter window, the 32-year-old has broadened José Mourinho’s attacking options at Benfica.
Paulo Robles, who coached him at Alverca, recalled an unusual moment that hinted at his leadership. "Because we had a good relationship and he liked to assert himself in front of the group, at one point he tore a training shirt and appeared on the steps down to the pitch with his arm strapped with it," he told A Bola.
Rafa has yet to contribute to a goal since returning to the Luz, and Robles urged patience. "We have to be calm. A player who has not competed with his team-mates for two or three months always has impediments that require some time," the Porto Alto coach said.
Another talking point is whether the former Portugal international could finish his career at Benfica. "Under normal conditions, Rafa wants to end his career very well and with titles. And if that happens at Benfica it will be excellent," said Onsoccer CEO João Araújo, speaking to MaisFutebol.
Benfica host Alverca on Sunday, 8 February, at 20:30 at the Estádio da Luz. The match is the 21st round of Liga Portugal Betclic, and Benfica are third on 46 points.
