The upcoming Real Madrid presidential election has taken an extraordinary twist after candidate Enrique Riquelme claimed he has already secured Erling Haaland’s agreement to join the club if he wins this weekend’s vote.
Riquelme, who is challenging long-time president Florentino Perez, made the bold promise during an appearance on Spanish television programme El Hormiguero. The 37-year-old businessman outlined an ambitious vision for the future of Real Madrid, insisting that both Manchester City striker Haaland and Ballon d'Or-winning midfielder Rodri would be wearing the famous white shirt under his leadership.
In an effort to convince supporters, Riquelme even revealed he had signed a notarised guarantee, promising to cover 100 per cent of club membership fees for the following season if he fails to deliver the transfers.
The dramatic claims have quickly generated headlines across Spain and beyond. However, Haaland's representatives have reportedly moved to distance the player from the election campaign, stressing that no formal agreement exists regarding a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
Any transfer would also be extremely complicated. Haaland remains under contract with Manchester City until 2034, while Rodri is tied to the Premier League champions until 2027.
Riquelme also pledged to appoint a world-class manager if elected, although he ruled out a return for Jose Mourinho. With voting set to take place on Sunday, his promises have added even more intrigue to an already fascinating presidential race.
