It hasn’t been long since Real Madrid announced the deal to sign Dean Huijsen, the club’s first major signing in the post-Carlo Ancelotti era.

However, it appears Los Blancos are already on the verge of completing a deal for yet another defender in the form of Alvaro Carreras.

The Spanish full-back has been one of the standout players for Benfica this season, which has put Real Madrid on red alert.

Alvaro Carreras deal practically done

A recent report from AS has offered a fresh update on Real Madrid’s pursuit of Alvaro Carreras.

As per the report, the club’s deal to sign the Benfica starlet is ‘practically done’. This update comes shortly after earlier reports which confirmed agreement between Carreras and Real Madrid.

Indeed, the Spanish giants are agreed to a €9 million per year contract with the left-back, who is expected to sign a deal until 2031.

The report adds that Real Madrid may announce the deal soon. As of now, Los Blancos and Benfica are finalising their negotiations.

Carreras, a former La Fabrica trainee, could prove to be a major coup for Real Madrid, who have struggled with a lack of quality in the left-back position.

Their first-choice option Ferland Mendy has struggled with injuries, with the club not having much hope on the Frenchman, at least on the fitness front.

As for Fran Garcia, the former Rayo Vallecano starlet has not been able to offer enough quality in the left-back position and it is apparent that the club require a definite upgrade.

That is where Carreras comes into the fray. As mentioned earlier, the Spaniard has been a standout player for Benfica this season and can offer technical brilliance in the wide defensive role.

Xabi Alonso has thrived in the past with a former Benfica fullback in the form of Alejandro Grimaldo. There is no reason why he cannot do the same with Alvaro Carreras, who may even have a higher ceiling than the former Barcelona youth prospect.
