David Alaba remains in the matchday squad, but there a persistent concerns over his ability to complete 90 minutes, following an ACL injury.

Alvaro Carreras has made a strong start to the campaign, as Xabi Alonso’s new left back, with Fran Garcia in reserve.

Carreras’ form has reduced the concern over when Ferland Mendy will return with the France international not featuring so far this season due to a muscle problem.

The club were confident Mendy’s lingering injury issues were over with the Les Bleus star signing a contract extension until 2028 but he was struggled in the latter part of Carlo Ancelotti’s final campaign.

Mendy steps up training return at Real Madrid

As per the latest update from Marca, Mendy has continued his staggered progress in training, with ball work for the first time since June.

That is a step in the right direction but Alonso will still practice caution over the next few weeks and he is certain to remain out until at least after the October international break.

Mendy will be aiming to step up his involvement from there on as he looks to assess if he still has a place in Alonso’s squad after a sustained absence.

The 30-year-old also has an eye on making Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup next summer in what will be his likely last chance to compete on the world stage with France.
