Real Madrid remain furious over the refereeing decisions made by Muniz Ruiz during their defeat against Espanyol.
The club has once again turned to its official media platform to criticise the handling of key incidents in the match, particularly the decision not to send off Carlos Romero for a dangerous tackle on Kylian Mbappe.
This incident proved decisive as the Valencian player went on to score the winning goal late in the game.
The club’s media highlighted what they consider to be a major refereeing failure, both on the pitch and from the VAR officials led by Iglesias Villanueva.
“The decisions made by Muniz Ruiz on the pitch and by Iglesias Villanueva in the VAR are part of the history of the most serious errors made by the Technical Committee of Referees of Medina Cantalejo and the head of the VAR, Clos Gomez,” they said on Real Madrid TV.
According to Real Madrid TV, the tackle on Mbappe was dangerous and reckless, posing a serious threat to the player’s safety. Despite this, Romero was only shown a yellow card, a decision that has sparked widespread controversy.
“It is incomprehensible, inexplicable, a worldwide scandal that this wild, brutal, terrible tackle by Carlos Romero, which seriously endangered Mbappe’s health, was only sanctioned with a yellow card by Muniz Ruiz.”
Real Madrid TV emphasised that the VAR’s failure to advise the referee of the seriousness of the incident added to the scandal. They argued that this was a clear red-card offence and criticised the referee for downplaying the severity of the challenge in his official match report.
“The most surreal thing is that from the VAR at Clos Gomez, Iglesias Villanueva did not warn the referee of the seriousness of it and that it was the clearest red card that can be remembered.”
Adding to the club’s frustrations, there were other contentious moments during the match. Real Madrid pointed out a possible handball by Jofre inside the penalty area, which went unnoticed by the officials.

Additionally, they questioned the decision to disallow a goal by Vinicius, claiming it was wrongly ruled out for a foul by Mbappé earlier in the play.
“If we look at the report, it says that in the 60th minute, Romero was cautioned for recklessly bringing down an opponent while fighting for the ball. While fighting for the ball.
“Romero himself admits that he only wants to stop Mbappe. There is not a single option to fight for the ball. His entry is from behind, at knee level and without any option to fight for the ball.
“Muniz Ruiz is not telling the truth in the wording of the report and is therefore lying. It is one of the biggest scandals ever remembered,” they added.
Real Madrid’s stance is that these incidents go beyond typical matchday controversies, as they have significantly influenced the outcome of the game.
This match has only heightened the tension between Real Madrid and the refereeing body, with the club determined to seek changes to improve the level of officiating in Spanish football.
