Real Madrid return to the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday afternoon for their next La Liga home fixture against Rayo Vallecano, looking to respond after a damaging defeat to Benfica
In the final game of the Champions League league phase, the result denied them automatic progression to the last 16.
In terms of La Liga, Alvaro Arbeloa’s men come into the contest on the back of a sequence of five straight league wins, with each of their most recent four victories achieved by at least a two-goal cushion.
That surge has trimmed the gap at the top, leaving Real Madrid just four points behind leaders Barcelona, with a game in hand.
In terms of selection, Arbeloa will again be without centre-back Eder Militao, who remains unavailable. Trent Alexander-Arnold also continues his recovery from a hamstring problem, while Antonio Rüdiger, although back working with the group in training, is not yet deemed ready for competitive action. Ferland Mendy is another absentee and will miss this clash as well.
There is better news in attack. Rodrygo is back in full training and expected to be trusted from the start, following his recent spell on the sidelines.
Kylian Mbappé, boasting 21 goals in 20 La Liga outings this term, remains in electric form. Behind him, Eduardo Camavinga is likely to join Aurélien Tchouaméni and Jude Bellingham in an athletic and technically gifted midfield unit, while Federico Valverde is poised to continue his duties at right-back.
Possible Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois; Valverde, Asencio, Huijsen, Carreras; Camavinga, Tchouameni, Bellingham; Rodrygo, Mbappe, Vinicius
The match will kick off at 1pm BST on Sunday, 1st February.
For viewers in the United Kingdom, Real Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano will be broadcast live on Premier Sports 2.
