In 1913 Real Sociedad finished runners-up to Barcelona after a unique Copa final that required three matches, all in Barcelona within eight days, during a season split by a new federation schism.

According to Diario Vasco, on 16 May 1912 Barcelona left the new federation, with Real, Irún Sporting and others forming the Unión de Clubs, later granted royal status. Enrique Pardiñas’ ties with Queen Victoria Eugenia secured a trophy for its championship.

Expected mass participation dwindled to three entrants, Barcelona, Real and Irún Sporting. A preliminary tie of up to four games between the Gipuzkoan clubs sent Real through after three wins. The final, set in Barcelona, was arranged over two legs but needed a third after two stalemates.

The opener on 16 March saw Real lead via Arrillaga, Barça turn it round, then Artola level late for 2-2.

The next day’s match ended goalless. Extra time was abandoned due to fading light.

With players exhausted and Holy Week limiting events, the decider moved to Sunday 23 March.

A vast crowd encroached after an early handball by Massana brought a penalty, pacified only when Barça officials explained the laws. Rezola converted, Barcelona replied with two before the break, and despite second-half pressure Real could not equalise.

Afterwards Barça hosted a banquet for their visitors. Pardiñas handed the Cup to president Hans Gamper as a deposit, saying Real still hoped to claim it in future.
